The Second Grade “Scoop”

Date: September 11
For the Week of: September 14-18

Reminders:
*Sept. 12: Zion Lutheran Church service at 5:00PM
*Sept. 13: Zion Lutheran Church service at 8:00AM and 10:45AM
*Sept. 15: Social Studies Test: The test will cover unit 3: Using Our Resources. A study guide was given out last week. We have gone over this material in class, and will review for the test in class. Students will need to study at home as well. Students will be bringing their social studies books home each afternoon, beginning on Monday, in order to help in the study process. Of course, students are not expected to study every evening; we are simply beginning to practice good study skills. Students should bring back books each morning. Please have your child come to me with any questions he/she may have about the study guide. The study guide has also been posted on our classroom blog. Thanks!
*Sept. 18: Midterm of First Quarter
*Sept. 21&22: School Pictures: Second grade will take pictures at 11:05 on Tuesday, Sept. 22. (Note: This is subject to change—I’ll let you know ASAP if it does!)
*Sept. 23: Midterm reports go home
*Sept. 25: School Carnival: Please sign up at the door to our classroom if you’d like to help! Also, no school lunch will be served on this day, due to set-up for the carnival. All students will need a sack lunch on this day. Thanks!

Spelling:
We will be learning unit 5 words this week. The list is enclosed. The pretest will be Monday, Sept. 14 and the final test will be Friday, Sept. 18. Reminder: Students who get all of the basic words right on Tuesday will not need to take the final test Friday. (Please note that correct challenge words do not “cancel out” missed basic words.) Also, a paper will be sent home with your child’s mid-quarter report. Please fill this out to let me know if you would like your child to have a more challenging spelling list each week. (More information will be sent home at that time.) Thanks!

Memory Work:
The memory work due next week is enclosed. Students may recite their memory work to me any morning of next week. In religion, we are studying Jacob and Joseph and how God chose them for a special purpose, just as He chooses us to be His children!

Math:
We will continue to work on our doubles +1. (For example, we know that 2+2=4, so 2+3=just one more than 4, which is 5.) We will also be working on sums of 8 and 9. Just a reminder that if your child needs some extra practice with math facts, I do have sets of flashcards available. Please let me know and I will gladly lend them out. There are many computer games that are helpful with fact practice as well; some of them can be found on our school website. Your child should know how to access them!

Reading:
Just a reminder to please have your child read out loud to you on a daily basis, when possible. Many of the students are “at-level” for smaller chapter books!
Also, our next sight word testing date will be September 23rd. Sight words will be going home on Monday, Sept. 14, and will need to be returned Friday, Sept. 18. The goal is instant recognition of each word. A little practice each night is helpful.

English/Language Arts:
We have been working on what makes a complete sentence, the four types of sentences: statement, question, command, exclamation, and subjects/predicates. We will begin a major writing project next, where students will be writing personal narratives!

Science:
In science class, we are studying plants and animals. We are currently working on classifying animals into the 5 groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and studying life cycles. We will move on to plants next week.

On a final note…
*Please continue to check your child’s HOME folder and assignment book each evening. It really helps to go through any mistakes on homework with your child, and you can be aware of how your child is doing in daily work!
*Just a reminder that you can access our class blog by going to www.zionmrsbrewer.blogspot.com OR by going to the school website (www.brightonzionlutheran.org), clicking on School, Class Pages, and Mrs. Brewer’s name. Feel free to explore our Zion website as well. Important information is posted there, such as dates and events, as well as interesting information, such as class test scores for ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills).
*Our chapel offering this quarter will go toward the Brighton Food Pantry.
*We are having a canned food drive throughout September to benefit the Catholic Charities Brighton Food Bank. Drop-off places will be located at the entrance to the school and preschool. If you can help out, that would be great!
God’s blessings on your week!

In Christ,
Mrs. Brewer

Parents,

This is a study guide for our first social studies test. We will be doing much of the test together since it is our first one. After this test they will be doing the tests independently. I will be reading each test, but will not offer any help. I am asking that you go over this study guide with your child for a few nights. This will help them prepare for the test and gain good study skills. Unit 3 covers pages 104-151. We have covered all of this in class, but if you would like to glance over the material you are more than welcome. Thank you!
