The Second Grade “Scoop”

Date: September 25
For the Week of: September 28-October 2 AND October 5-9

Reminders:
*Sept. 26, Oct. 3: Zion Lutheran Church service at 5:00PM
*Sept. 27, Oct. 4: Zion Lutheran Church service at 8:00AM and 10:45AM
*Sept. 30-Oct.2: NO SCHOOL—Rocky Mountain District Teacher’s Conference
*Oct. 11, Sunday: Second grade sings at the 8:00AM church service here at Zion.
*Oct. 12: Science Test on Unit A: A study guide is enclosed. We will be going over and reviewing the material as a class, but students will need to look up answers to questions and study the material outside of class as well. Students will begin bringing their science books home each afternoon. Again, I am not expecting students to study every night; they will just be bringing their science books home each afternoon as a good study habit, and so that they have it available on nights when they can study.

Spelling:
No spelling lists next week. For the week of Oct. 5-9, we will be on unit 8 for the book list, and list 1 for the challenge list. The pretests for both will be on Monday, Oct. 5, and the final tests will be Friday, Oct. 9. (If I have not received a note back from you, I will send just the book list home with your child.)

Memory Work:
No memory work next week. For the week of Oct. 5-9, memory work is enclosed. Students may say their memory work any day during that week of school.

Math:
We will continue to work on our sums of 10, and will begin working on addition facts with sums of 11 or 12. (Just a reminder: if your child needs some extra practice with math facts, I do have sets of flashcards available. Please let me know and I will gladly lend them out. There are many computer games that are helpful with fact practice as well; some of them can be found on our school website. Your child should know how to access them!)

Reading:
Just a reminder to please have your child read out loud to you on a daily basis, when possible. Many of the students are “at-level” for smaller chapter books!
* No sight words next week. New sight words will go home Tuesday, Oct. 6, and will need to be returned Friday, Oct. 9.

English/Language Arts:
We are beginning to learn about nouns: singular, plural, proper, and possessive. Students have learned a “jingle” to help them remember what a noun does.

Science:
In science class, we continue to study plants and animals. A study guide is enclosed. The test will be Monday, October 12th. Please have your child ask me if he/she has any questions about the study guide. Thanks!

On a final note…
*Please continue to check your child’s HOME folder and assignment book each evening.
*Just a reminder that you can access our class blog by going to http://www.zionmrsbrewer.blogspot.com/ OR by going to the school website (http://www.brightonzionlutheran.org/), clicking on School, Class Pages, and Mrs. Brewer’s name.
*Our chapel offering this quarter will go toward the Brighton Food Pantry.
*Thank you for your donations for the food drive!
*We have started using the library. Students are responsible for taking care of their books and videos, as well as for turning them in on time.
*Students who are absent are responsible for making up their work in a timely manner. This is important for them, so that they don’t fall farther behind in class, and so that I can get their work graded and entered quickly. Thanks so much!
*A HUGE thank-you in advance for ALL your help and donations for the school carnival! It would not happen without all of you! A special thank-you to Kim Clark for heading our class booth this year! Thanks for ALL your hard work!
God’s blessings on your week!
*The students finished a series of questions for their journals this week. I wanted to share part of what they wrote. They completed the following sentence: “God is….”
(For reasons of safety, I can’t put names of students. Feel free to ask which one your child wrote!)

God is…my Lord.
God is…very good.
God is…the light of the world!
God is…wonderful!
God is…good to me.
God is…good.
God is…powerful.
God is…awesome to us!
God is…Jesus’ Dad. J
God is…good and I love Him.
God is…love.
God is…with you wherever you go.
God is…my love.
God is…powerful.
God is…good for those who love Him.

In Christ,
Mrs. Brewer
