The Second Grade “Scoop”

Date: September 4
For the Week of: September 7-11

Reminders:
*Sept. 5: Zion Lutheran Church service at 5:00PM
*Sept. 6: Zion Lutheran Church service at 8:00AM and 10:45AM
*Sept. 7: Labor Day—No School
*Sept. 10: Early Release at 2:00PM due to volleyball/soccer games. All students will be dismissed at 2:00PM on this date in order to accommodate the volleyball and soccer teams coming from Pueblo.
*Sept. 15: Social Studies Test: The test will cover unit 3: Using Our Resources. A study guide is enclosed. We have gone over this material in class, and will review for the test in class. Students will need to study at home as well. Students will be bringing their social studies books home each afternoon, beginning on Monday, in order to help in the study process. Of course, students are not expected to study every evening; we are simply beginning to practice good study skills. Students should bring back books each morning. Please have your child come to me with any questions he/she may have about the study guide. Thanks!
*Sept. 25: School Carnival: Please sign up at the door to our classroom if you’d like to help! Thanks!

Spelling:
We will be learning unit 4 words this week. The list is enclosed. The pretest will be TUESDAY, Sept. 8 and the final test will be Friday, Sept. 11. Reminder: Students who get all of the basic words right on Tuesday will not need to take the final test Friday. (Please note that correct challenge words do not “cancel out” missed basic words.)

Memory Work:
The memory work due next week is enclosed. Students may recite their memory work to me any morning of next week. In religion, we are studying Abraham and Sarah and their relationship with the Lord.

Math:
We will continue to work on our 9s, as well as our doubles +1. For example, we know that 2+2=4, so 2+3=just one more than 4, which is 5. Also, if your child needs some extra practice with math facts, I do have sets of flashcards available. Please let me know and I will gladly lend them out. There are many computer games that are helpful with fact practice as well; some of them can be found on our school website. Your child should know how to access them!

Reading:
Just a reminder to please have your child read out loud to you on a daily basis, when possible. Many of the students are “at-level” for smaller chapter books!
Also, our first sight word testing date will be September 9th. We will test first, and then sight word cards will begin going home. The goal is instant recognition of each word. A little practice each night is helpful.
*Mrs. Reiling, and Mr. and Mrs. Chockley will be taking reading groups on certain days each week. We thank them for their willingness to help second graders become better and better readers!

HOME folder:
Please continue to check your child’s HOME folder each evening. It is also helpful to go through missed problems with your child. Many times the students fix mistakes in class, but it is also helpful for them to go through their work at home. The students are doing a great job of remembering their folders each morning!

Assignment Books:
Please continue to check your child’s assignment book each evening. I’m very pleased with the job they are doing of filling out their books each afternoon in a neat and organized manner.

On a final note…
*Just a reminder that you can access our class blog by going to www.zionmrsbrewer.blogspot.com OR by going to the school website (www.brightonzionlutheran.org), clicking on School, Class Pages, and Mrs. Brewer’s name.
*Mr. Brewer has asked us to send a reminder that students should not wear shorts on chapel days (Wednesdays) if at all possible. Thanks!
*Our chapel offering this quarter will go toward the Brighton Food Pantry.
*We are having a canned food drive throughout September to benefit the Catholic Charities Brighton Food Bank. Drop-off places will be located at the entrance to the school and preschool. If you can help out, that would be great!
God’s blessings on your week!

In Christ,
Mrs. Brewer
