Memory Work:
Memory work is enclosed. Students may say their memory work any morning next week.

Math:
We are building up to 100 subtraction facts. We continue working on subtraction facts (8s and 9s). I do have both addition and subtraction flashcards to loan out for extra practice!

Reading:
*Also, the BookIt program continues this month. February calendars were given out 3 weeks ago. Our goal is 15 minutes of reading a day, or 420 total minutes for the month of February. All February calendars are due Monday, March 1. Students who do complete their reading goal for February will get a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! Have your child let me know if he/she needs a new calendar.

English/Language Arts:
We continue to work on pronouns and expository writing. Your child has learned a “jingle” to help them remember what pronouns do in a sentence; we are also working on subject-verb agreement.
Science:
We continue to learn more about the sun, moon, stars, and planets. The students are learning a “trick” to help them remember the eight planets in order. Enclosed is a study guide for a planet quiz we will be taking Monday, March 1.

Social Studies:
The students did a super job on their President projects! I will be keeping the pamphlets in order to display them for Night at the Museum in April. Green grade sheets have been/will be sent home to show your child’s score for the project.

On a final note…
*Please continue to check your child’s HOME folder and assignment book each evening.
*Just a reminder that you can access our class blog by going to www.zionmrsbrewer.blogspot.com OR by going to the school website (www.brightonzionlutheran.org), clicking on School, Class Pages, and Mrs. Brewer’s name.
*Beginning in the second half of our school year, each student will have a chance to be our Student of the Week. When it is your child’s turn, he/she will bring home a form to fill out. Please help your child fill out the form by Wednesday of his/her week. On that day, he/she will share his/her answers with us and also have the opportunity to share one special item. More information will be sent when it is your child’s week.
*Chapel offerings are going toward Lutheran World Relief to help the people of Haiti. The “Quarter Raiders” are back as well! The National Junior Honor Society is collecting quarters and other spare change to help the people of Haiti. Students and parents can put spare change into our red and blue bucket by the SRA box.
*We will take the beginning part of next week to finish up Iowa Basics tests. Many students were absent, and we will use this week to help them get caught up as well. If your child was absent recently, please help them stay organized in getting their homework turned in, and please help them be prepared for any tests (spelling, memory work, and social studies) that they may have missed. Thanks!
God’s blessings on your week!
In Christ,
Mrs. Brewer

Dear parents/guardians,
In science class we are studying the planets and the solar system. We will be having a quiz on this information on Monday, March 1. Your child will need to know the planets in order, beginning with the planet closest to the sun. I will have a list of the planets so the students can spell them correctly. We will be reviewing these things in class, but it is important that students study at home as well. This is just a quiz. The following information will be on the quiz.

*List the planets in order.
This mnemonic device may help your child remember the order.

1. Mercury MY
2. Venus VERY
3. Earth EXCELLENT
4. Mars MOTHER
5. Jupiter JUST
6. Saturn SERVED
7. Uranus US
8. Neptune NACHOS

*The following questions will be fill-in-the-blank.

*What is at the center of the solar system? The sun.

*What planet is closest to the sun? Mercury

*What planet is farthest from the sun? Neptune

*What star is closest to Earth? The sun.

*What planet is the largest? Jupiter
