The Second Grade “Scoop”

For the Week of: Summertime!

Reminders:
*May 20: Eighth Grade Graduation@7:00PM
*May 21: Last Day of School—Early Release @11:30AM; we will not be doing the pizza this year, due to our inability to use the field, but rather will be playing some games outside following our chapel service at 9:30AM. Students will need a snack on this day, as usual, but no lunch due to early dismissal.
*May 26: Report cards mailed home.
*June 7-11: Vacation Bible School here at Zion—all kids and helpers welcome!

*A HUGE thank-you to all drivers and chaperones, and ALL of you for helping out so much this year! I truly appreciate all you’ve done for me and for your children.

*Enclosed is a “summer packet” you may wish to look through and/or use this summer. Hopefully it can be of help with retention and/or boredom this summer, wherever your plans take you! Also, students will be taking home their spelling workbooks, and there are some review units in those books that we did not get to. Some students may enjoy doing these over the summer.

*If there is anything I can do to support you and your child’s education in the following years at Zion, please let me know!

For the Week of: May 17-21

Reminders:
*May 14: Field Day at Denver Lutheran High School! Just a few reminders:
*Parents/guardians are “in charge” of students this day.
*Students may show up at Lutheran High School at any time—preferably before their first
event. Please note that parking spaces at the school are limited.
*There is a concession stand from which to buy food; feel free to pack a picnic lunch/snacks if
you so desire!
*Please have your child “check-in” with me over at the ball throw area. (This is my way of
taking attendance. I also enjoy hearing how your child’s day is going.)
*If your child is an alternate for the grade relay, please have them be there for the event just in case another child does not show up.
*If you can, stay for the school relay (final event) and cheer Zion on!
*You MAY need: sunscreen, umbrella, warm weather clothes, cool weather clothes, cold
weather clothes, hat, stocking hat, athletic shoes, snow boots, fuzzy bunny slippers…who
knows—it’s May in Colorado!
*May 15: Graduation Party for Mr. Mumby here at Zion@6:30PM. Please bring a dessert to share.
*May 17: Field trip to the Colorado State Capitol Building: Permission forms have been sent home. Please fill out and return your child’s form by Monday if you have not done so. Thanks! Information regarding drivers/groups has been sent home. If you are driving, please meet in the school library at 8:30AM. Also, book projects are due on this day.

*Apr. 23: Mid-Quarter; Night at the Museum 6-8PM: The entire school is turned into a museum! This is a great opportunity to see your child’s artwork. There will be “living art” as well. Come for a fun and entertaining evening!

Also, this is considered a school day, and we are required to take attendance. Book Project: Story Cube

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Students will be doing a special end-of-the-year project for reading class. Each student should choose a book he/she has not read, read it, and then complete the project described in this packet. Please help your child choose a book that he/she has not read yet, and would be interested in. Many students are ready for chapter books, and these may be used as well. The approximate time line would be as follows:

*Have the book read by May 7th.
*Have the story cube done by May 17th.

Students will present their story cubes to the class. They will earn points on the following parts of the project:

Title and author written or typed on the top. (5 pts.)
Five sentences to tell about the best part of the book (written or typed) on another side. (10 pts.)
Draw/color a picture of favorite character on another side. (5 pts.)
Five new words (words you did not know) from the story, and their meanings on another side. (10 pts.)
Draw/color a scene from the story on another side. (5 pts.)
Correct spelling and grammar. (5 pts.)

This grade will go toward their overall reading grade for this quarter. If you or your child has any questions, please contact me!

One shoe box
Colored construction paper or wrapping paper
Pencil
Crayons or markers
Glue
Scissors

What You Do
Cover the box with colored construction paper or wrapping paper.
Cut a piece for the top, bottom, and each side.
Glue the paper to your box.
Print the title and author of your book on the top.
On one side, write five sentences to tell about the best part of your book.
On another side, draw a picture of your favorite character.
On the third side, write five new words from the story and their meanings.
On the fourth side, draw a scene from the story.

Spelling:
We will be on unit 31 for the book list, and list 21 for the challenge list. The pretests will be Tuesday, Apr. 6, and the final tests will be Friday, Apr. 9. (There are “extra” challenge words on the challenge list. These are just for fun—not graded. Students who do master the extra challenge words will have the opportunity to pick from the prize basket.)

Memory Work:
Memory work is enclosed. The students have begun learning the books of the Bible, beginning with the first half of the Old Testament. This week we will be working on the second half of the Old Testament (enclosed.) This will help the students in looking up verses. We will be learning a song in class to help us learn the order, but students will need to study/practice at home as well. Thanks!

We continue working on 100 subtraction facts and our 5s multiplication facts. Also, we will begin our 2s multiplication facts. I do have addition, subtraction, and multiplication flashcards to loan out for extra practice! Here are the 5s and 2s times tables:

We will be working on adverbs and adjectives. The students are also working in computer class with Mrs. Heidt on a special movie about sea creatures. They will be writing mini reports which will go on the movie as well.

Social Studies:
We continue unit 5 entitled “A World of Many People.” Students will be learning about different cultures around the world. I will also be teaching them a little about the Hawaiian culture. Look for a study guide to go home April 6 when we return from spring/Easter break.

*Mrs. Grein is again gearing up for our summer school program! This is a great way for any and all students to review basic second grade concepts in math and reading, and also a great way to keep brains functioning over the summer months so that students can feel confident moving into third grade. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please fill out the form that was sent home with the report cards, or speak with Mrs. Grein or myself if you need a new one.
*Several students have been coming to school with minor injuries or health issues (especially on P.E. daysJ). If your child is unable to participate in our activities on these days, please send a note; otherwise, I will make the decision as to his/her ability to participate. Thanks!
*Because we are now in fourth quarter, and because I am trying to prepare students for third grade, my expectations will be higher in terms of neatness and completeness when it comes to daily work. The students have been doing a great job thus far!

In science class we are studying the planets and the solar system. We will be having a quiz on this information on Monday, March 1. Your child will need to know the planets in order, beginning with the planet closest to the sun. I will have a list of the planets so the students can spell them correctly. English/Language Arts:
We continue to work on pronouns and expository writing. Your child has learned a “jingle” to help them remember what pronouns do in a sentence; we are also working on when to use I and me, we and us.

Science:
We continue to learn more about the sun, moon, stars, and planets. The students are learning a “trick” to help them remember the eight planets in order.

Social Studies:
We are studying about our government, and how it works at the city, state, and national levels. We took our unit test today. President projects are due Tuesday, February 16!

*Feb. 5-6: Zion Lutheran Boys Varsity Basketball Tournament: The championship game is tomorrow (2/6) at 5:30PM. There will be a spectacular jump-rope performance at half-time. Come cheer for Zion and watch the Flying Eagles!
*Feb. 10th: Skating Party for Valentines Day! We will be taking buses after lunch to the Wagon Wheel Skating Rink. Permission forms have been sent home. Please have your child return his/her slip if he/she has not done so. Students may get skates at the rink, or bring their own--(skates will be inspected by the employees of the rink). Also, there is a snack bar and game machines for those students who don’t wish to skate. Parents may pick students up at the skating rink, unless they are enrolled in daycare for that day.
*Feb. 11th: Field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science. An informational note and permission form was sent home last week. Please fill out the form and have your child return it as soon as possible, if he/she has not done so. Please make checks out to Zion Lutheran School. Students and drivers do need payment of $9 each. Also, students have been put into driving/chaperone groups. This note was sent home on Tuesday, Feb. 2. If you need an extra, please have your child let me know. Also, if your child requires a booster seat, please be sure your child brings it on Feb. 11! Thanks!

*Because we are preparing for third grade, and because we are half-way through second grade, we will begin using the Missing-Incomplete-Late Assignment Notice blue slips. Students have been doing a great job getting homework done and turned in. These slips will continue to help students stay organized. An example of the slip was enclosed in last week’s newsletter. Students who forget/do not complete homework (including memory work) will receive this slip to take home. It does need to be signed and returned the following school day. I do not anticipate having to use these very often, but I did want you to be aware of this school-wide policy. Thanks for your help in this area!
*Do you shop at Walmart? Do you enjoy Subway? Consider buying gift cards from our school! This is the scrip fundraiser! Simply shop where you normally do, but consider buying a gift card first. Zion receives funds from the purchase of the cards. A list of vendors was sent in an email to all school families, and there is also a list in the school office. It may mean planning ahead a little, but you will spend the same amount as you normally would at these particular vendors. Orders do need to be turned in Tuesday of each week, and the cards will be handed out Friday each week.

Dear parents/guardians,

In social studies, we are studying our government. We are discussing the 3 branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. We are expanding on the executive branch by researching a president. Your child will be researching (see your child's hard copy)_____________________________. Your child may need some assistance in researching his/her president.
Your child’s assignment is to design a brochure telling about the president they have chosen. This is to be a tri-fold brochure. It can be written or typed. If your child chooses to type it, he/she may want to use the following procedure: Open a word document and click on “file.” Go to “page set up” and you should see two choices under the heading orientation. Choose the landscape option. Then go to “format” and click on “columns.” Choose the option for 3 columns. At this point, your child may get started. I ask that students use complete sentences. Using bullets is a great way to keep it organized and easy to follow. (I’m sure you are more computer savvy than me, so feel free to explore other options.)
The appearance of the brochure is very important. I suggest that students include at least one picture. Students can make it colorful by using pictures, stickers, color pencils, etc. I have included a rubric on the back side of this sheet which explains the requirements. It shows exactly how many points each student will receive based on the appearance of the brochure and the information included. Students may add anything else they feel is interesting or appropriate.
Students will be given three weeks to complete this project. The brochure is due on Tuesday, February 16. The students will present them to the class that week. I expect them to know the information concerning their president. They will have their brochure with them for the presentation but I do not want them to simply read it. The presentation is a small part of their overall grade. I encourage parents/guardians to support their children in the project, especially the research part of it. The students seem very excited about the project! Have your child ask if he/she has any questions along the way. I am excited to see how the brochures turn out! Have fun!!

Please help your child fill out the form by Wednesday of his/her week. On that day, he/she will share his/her answers with us and also have the opportunity to share one special item. More information will be sent when it is your child’s week.
*Because we are preparing for third grade, and because we are half-way through second grade, we will begin using the Missing-Incomplete-Late Assignment Notice blue slips. Students have been doing a great job getting homework done and turned in. These slips will continue to help students stay organized. An example of the slip is enclosed. Students who forget/do not complete homework (including memory work) will receive this slip to take home. It does need to be signed and returned the following school day. I do not anticipate having to use these very often, but I did want you to be aware of this school-wide policy. Thanks for your help in this area!
*Do you shop at Walmart? Do you enjoy Subway? Consider buying gift cards from our school! This is the scrip fundraiser! Simply shop where you normally do, but consider buying a gift card first. Zion receives funds from the purchase of the cards. A list of vendors was sent in an email to all school families, and there is also a list in the school office. It may mean planning ahead a little, but you will spend the same amount as you normally would at these particular vendors. Orders do need to be turned in Tuesday of each week, and the cards will be handed out Friday each week.

English/Language Arts:
We continue to work on the forms of the verb be, as well as helping and linking verbs, commas in the names of places, and the forms of verbs go and do.

Science:
We are finishing up our study about the earth and its natural resources. The test is Monday, Jan. 11. A study guide was sent home Monday, Jan. 4. The study guide is also posted on our classroom blog. Our new unit will be about weather and space. We also will be taking a field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science to visit the expedition health exhibit as well as the IMAX. This field trip will fit with a nutrition/body unit we will do at the end of the year. More information will be coming….

Social Studies:
We are studying about our government, and how it works at the city, state, and national levels. Students will do a special president project in February.

Dear Parents,
We have completed science unit C, entitled Our Earth, and the above study guide will help your child study for the test, which will be Monday, January 11th. Students should fill in the blanks and answer the questions to help them prepare. The study guide does not need to be returned; however, students will need to study this material outside of class. We will review together in class before the test. Students will begin bringing science books home each afternoon to help them study. The books do need to be returned the next morning. As always, we will go through the test together as a class, but I will not offer help. Please have your child ask if he/she has any questions!

Dear Parents,
It’s that time again! We will be having our unit 2 social studies test on Friday, December 18th. We will take it before our Christmas party. We did not want your child to have to study for a test over break, so we thought we would take care of it before break. Like the previous tests, I will read the test out loud, but I will not offer any help. Unit 2 begins on page 66. Much of the test is reading tables and maps, so students need to study those skills as well. Pages 100-103 are a review and test prep. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks!

Study Guide
Unit 2: The World Around Us

*Know the difference between relative and absolute locations. The book gives an example of an absolute location…find that.
*The United States is a part of which continent?
*Which country is the neighbor to the north of the U.S.?
*Which country is the neighbor to the south of the U.S.?
*Know the following landforms: hills, mountain range, peninsula, island
*Know the following bodies of water: gulf, rivers, lakes, bay
*Know the four seasons.
*Know the four cardinal directions.
*What do directions help you do?
*What is the Equator? What is the farthest point from the Equator?
*What is a compass rose? Are you able to draw a compass rose with cardinal and intermediate directions?

*Not every question above will be on the test. The above section will be multiple choice questions. I will have the kids draw a compass rose with the cardinal (north, east, south, west) and intermediate directions (northeast, southeast, southwest, northwest).

*The chart on the test will be similar to that on page 102. There will be statements about the chart and students will have to tell whether the statement is true or false.

*The map portion of the test will ask questions about states in the northeast. It may ask which state is north of Pennsylvania or what direction you should go to get from Massachusetts to New Hampshire. All the questions should be able to be answered by reading the map. Practice by studying page 103.

We will continue to review in class, but students will need to study at home as well. This practice quiz may be helpful with that process. Students will need to be able to write the name of the continent on the map where it belongs, and then write the name of each ocean where it belongs. They will not need to memorize the spellings of the continents and oceans, but it would be a good challenge for them to try! Also, extra credit will be given to any student who can memorize the names and spellings of the 5 Great Lakes! (HINT: HOMES—Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).

Social Studies:
We have begun learning about our continents and oceans, as well as how to read and use maps! Enclosed is a map of our 7 continents and 4 oceans. We will be taking a quiz on this information before Christmas break. (An exact date has not been set yet, but will be given several days in advance.) We have begun practicing in class, and will continue to review, but students will need to practice and study at home as well. December 4, I will send home an example of the test for further study and review, and then students will take the quiz the following week (Dec. 7-11). More information coming….

Students who do complete their reading goal for November will get a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut!

English/Language Arts:
We continue to work on writing descriptively. We will begin studying verbs.

Science:
In science class, we continue our unit on animals and their habitats. Information about a habitat project that will be due November 9th was sent home. Students have chosen their animals, and have been given information about how to do the project, but they may need some parental assistance with researching their animal and its habitat. If your child has any questions about the project, please have him/her ask me! We will begin sharing the projects on Monday, and they will be displayed on tables down the hallway for students and parents to see. Thanks!

Social Studies:
We will begin learning about our continents and oceans, as well as how to read and use maps!

Miss Rempfer and I were able to acquire some pizza certificates. Therefore; students who do complete their reading goal for October will get a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! Second Grade Habitat Project: Due Nov. 9th

Dear Parents/Guardians,
In science class, we are studying animals and their environments. We have been/will be talking about all different kinds of habitats. This project will be an at-home project. Your child may need your help. Your child chose a/an _______________. Your child will need to research his/her animal a little bit. Then your child will need to get a shoebox. He/she will “transform” the shoebox into the animal’s habitat. He/she may use the materials of his/her choice. In addition, I am asking that your child answer the questions on the bottom half of this sheet. The questions, with answers, will need to be rewritten (or typed) on a separate sheet and turned in with the project. Enclosed is a piece of lined paper for your child to copy the questions and write the answers. Please help your child answer each question with a complete sentence. This habitat project is due on Monday, November 9, 2009. Your child will present his/her habitat to the class and share with the class the answers to the questions. Please help your child prepare to read and explain the answers. (They will get points for the short presentation, and the grade will go toward their overall science grade). Please ask if you have any questions! Thanks!

*Oct. 28: Our first field trip! We will be having a skating party! In place of a Halloween party, we will go skating at the Wagon Wheel Skating Rink. Permission forms have been sent home. Please let me know and I will gladly lend them out. There are many computer games that are helpful with fact practice as well; some of them can be found on our school website. We have had a “writers’ workshop” this past week, where the students have been working on our first major writing project! They are learning how to write personal narratives using the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing!

Science:
In science class, we continue to study plants and animals. We are studying the parts of a plant. Be looking for a study guide for an upcoming unit test to be going home in the next few weeks.

We have gone over this material in class, and will review for the test in class. Students will need to study at home as well. Students will be bringing their social studies books home each afternoon, beginning on Monday, in order to help in the study process. Of course, students are not expected to study every evening; we are simply beginning to practice good study skills. Students should bring back books each morning. This is a study guide for our first social studies test. We will be doing much of the test together since it is our first one. After this test they will be doing the tests independently. I will be reading each test, but will not offer any help. I am asking that you go over this study guide with your child for a few nights. This will help them prepare for the test and gain good study skills. Unit 3 covers pages 104-151.
